The Old Water Tower

by Christian on February 8, 2012

Built from using large blocks of limestone rock, this is the Old Water Tower in Chicago.. which kind of looks like castle more so than a water tower to me. It’s one of the many few buildings that still stands remaining after the Great Chicago Fire of 1881 that leveled the city.

Now after visiting Chicago in December, I know exactly what they mean when calling it the windy city.. I heard warnings of high wind and that Lake Michigan could possibly overflow into the streets. Well, the warnings were right on and I was out and about taking pictures all the way through it. However, it wasn’t all that bad, I did get acquainted with some of the world’s nicest hotels to warm up!

Lasering in on the Reichstag Building

by Christian on February 2, 2012

This is the Reichstag building in Berlin, which was constructed to house the the first parliament of the German Empire. This place is a haven for photographers with a huge dome on top that was constructed and finished in 1999 that sadly was closed enduring my stay.

An interesting fact that my tour guide told about this building is that although it was around in the days of World War 2, Adolf Hitler never stepped foot into this building.

Eastern Cemetery: A Tale From The Crypt

by Christian on January 30, 2012

Eastern Cemetery, incorporated in 1850 and abandoned in 1989 after the discovery that bodies are literally stacked on top of each other – 48,000 people buried in 16,000 graves.. A Kentucky state investigator also determined that 95 percent of the infant graves here are as shallow as 6 inches deep,  many began popping out of the ground and had to be reburied. There has been many reports of ghost sightings and ritual animal sacrifices taking place here :/

I have to admit.. This place is one of the spookiest places I’ve ever been. It’s old, abandoned, and looks like it came straight out from a Jason movie scene. I would recommend this place for a good scare on Halloween, or an exceptional place for a first date! haha Perhaps that’s the reason why I’m still single.  :-)

Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp

by Christian on January 27, 2012

This is Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp, which is a 45 minute train ride outside of Berlin, Germany. Next to visiting Anne Frank’s house in Amsterdam, this is one of the saddest places I’ve ever been. If you notice the writing, which is the first thing you see when “welcomed” to the camp, the sign reads “work and you shall be set free.” Nobody was ever freed, nobody ever escaped and if you were Jewish or a homosexual, your expectancy to remain alive within this camp was 14 days or less.

You would be worked to death running nonstop testing out the Nazi’s boots on various types of terrain only being fed dirty water and moldy bread. If you died while on duty, no big deal.. You would then be placed into an oven and cremated while the rest of the prisoners worked at gun point while having to endure the smell of your burning flesh.

When I’m abroad and people ask where I’m from, two things come into their mind.. Churchill Downs and Kentucky Friend Chicken! Opened in 1875 and ever since then, Churchill Downs has hosted the Kentucky Derby, the Kentucky Oaks, and the Breeders’ Cup on several occasions. It has also been ranked among the most exquisite horse racing tracks in all of America. This place is where it’s at on the first week of May each year for the Kentucky Derby, otherwise known as the run for the roses and the two greatest minutes in sports.

Hollywood celebrities start flocking, the women look stunningly shocking, and the who’s who is in Louisville for the Derby weekend.. It just doesn’t get much better than this folks!

About the Photo

This was taken in the paddock area of Churchill Downs. I’m really pleased with how this one came out and I’m really getting to enjoy my new 14-24 wide-angle lens. :-)
